2015 was a blessed, dreamt-of year, with favourable weather conditions from spring to harvest. Each step took place under ideal conditions: flowering was even, and then the necessary rainfall for the growth of the vines came before the very dry months of June and July. Véraison went like a wonder. The pips started to ripen very early. August, with some timely rains and mild temperatures, allowed the vine to develop well and for the grapes to ripen in a balanced way. The fine days and cool nights in September, accompanied by some showers, favoured the ripening of the tannins.
At the Cape Wine Auction on 9th and 10th February, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest represented Château Angélus with a lot consisting of an Imperial of Château Angélus 2011, a stay at the local Saint-Emilion hotel Logis de La Cadène and a private tasting and tour of Château Angélus. This two-day auction celebrates South African wines on the world stage, while inviting sector professionals to a charitable event that supports the education and seeks to improve the life of children living in the Cape winegrowing region.
The 20 drawings made by the artist Floc’h for Angélus were all unveiled on 28th November in Paris at the Gallimard Gallery. Alongside the artist, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal and Thierry Grenié de Boüard welcomed guests for a cocktail tasting.
By way of twenty original drawings inspired by L’Angélus of Jean-François Millet, the artist has offered a journey taking us around the world.
As part of its policy to develop the sponsorship of art, Angélus gave carte blanche to Floc’h, the master of the “clear line”, to create an original work that reflected his view of the wine estate today.
Floc’h thus produced twenty drawings inspired by Jean-François Millet’s L’Angélus, an iconic work in which the great 19th century painter immortalised the moment of prayer marking the end of the day’s labours in the fields.
The photographer Johan Berglund accompanied us throughout this harvest casting an artist’s eye on Angélus and providing a unique perspective in a collection of images which we share with you here.
2017: bursting with stunning fruit flavour
The growing season started with a bang with the vines budding very early.
At the end of April, frost struck the Bordeaux vineyard hard, sadly dashing some growers’ prospects of producing any crop at all. At Angélus, where nature was kinder, we were scarcely affected by this sad episode.
There on, everything went wonderfully well with excellent flowering followed by a very hot month of June, which provided the vines with the necessary energy and strength to grow superb grapes.
Summer was quite cool but dry, which favoured the preservation of fresh fruit aromatics and slow ripening.
As the end of summer approached, with its occasional showers, the harvest got underway -beginning on September 13th!
